Mistral AI raised $830 million in debt financing to build a major artificial intelligence data center near Paris, the company told Reuters on Monday.
The funding marks the French AI startup’s first debt raise and will be used to purchase 13,800 Nvidia chips for the facility in Bruyeres-le-Chatel, expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2026. Reuters reported on March 30, 2026.
Mensch’s European Autonomy Push
Mistral’s debt raising was financed by a consortium of seven banks, including BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC and MUFG. The Paris-based startup, which provides AI models to the French armed forces, has positioned itself as a European alternative to U.S. AI leaders. ‘Scaling our infrastructure in Europe is critical to empower our customers and to ensure AI innovation and autonomy remain at the heart of Europe,’ said Arthur Mensch, chief executive of Mistral.
U.S. vs. Chinese Cloud Dominance
The data center is part of Mistral’s strategy to scale AI infrastructure in Europe to compete with U.S. and Chinese tech giants. The company selected the site for its first data center in February 2025 and recently unveiled plans for a second facility in Sweden, aiming to secure 200 megawatts of capacity across Europe by the end of 2027. The facility will enable Mistral to offer GPU-powered infrastructure services directly to clients in the region, reducing reliance on external cloud providers.
Sweden Facility Targets 200MW
Mistral said the data center near Paris is expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2026. The company aims to secure 200 megawatts of capacity across Europe by the end of 2027, with the Sweden facility contributing to this target. This infrastructure expansion addresses growing client demand for data sovereignty.
The debt financing provides Mistral with capital to purchase 13,800 Nvidia chips without diluting equity, a strategic move for a company seeking to maintain independence while scaling hardware. Operational launch is set for Q2 2026.
